Media Art

Mind Map

Essay

Media (New Media)

New media is a broad term that emerged in the later part of the 20th century to encompass the amalgamation of traditional media such as film, images, music, spoken and written word, with the interactive power of computer and communications technology, computer-enabled consumer devices and most importantly the Internet. New media holds out a possibility of on-demand access to content any time, anywhere, on any digital device, as well as interactive user feedback, creative participation and community formation around the media content. What distinguishes New media from traditional media is not the digitizing of media content into bits, but the dynamic life of the "new media" content and its interactive relationship with the media consumer. This dynamic life, moves, breathes and flows with pulsing excitement in real time. Another important promise of New Media is the "democratization" of the creation, publishing, distribution and consumption of media content.

Most technologies described as "new media" are digital, often having characteristics of being manipulated, networkable, dense, compressible, interactive and impartial. Some examples may be the Internet, websites, computer multimedia, computer games, CD-ROMS, and DVDs. New media is not television programs, feature films, magazines, books, or paper-based publications - unless they contain technologies that enable digital interactivity, such as graphic tags containing web-links.

The definition for image is artifact, for example two-dimensional picture that has a similar experience to some subject. The definition of graphic is visual representation on some surface such as a wall, canvas, computer screen and paper. The definition of text is a combination of alphabets from A-Z in form of words or sentences. The definition of sound is traveling wave that is oscillation of pressure transmitted to a solid, liquid or gas composed of frequencies within the range of hearing and of a level sufficient strong to be heard. Meanwhile, the definition of animation is rapid display of a sequence of images of 2-D or 3-D artwork or model positions in order to create an illusion of movement. Other type of artwork that can be produce is new invention. This kind of artworks combines all the elements above to achieve uniqueness. New inventions are a change in the thought process for doing something or the useful application of new inventions or discoveries. It may refer to incremental emergent or radical and revolutionary changes in thinking products, processes or organizations.

Interactivity has become a term for number of new media uses options evolving from the rapid dissemination of Internet access point, the digitalization of the media, and media convergence. In 1984, Rice defined the new media as communication technologies that enable or facilitate user-to-user interactivity and interactivity between user and information. Such as Internet replaces the "one-to-many" model of traditional mass communication with the possibility of a "many-to-many" web of communication. Any individual with the appropriate technology can now produce his or her online media and include images, text, and sound about whatever he or she chooses. So the new media with technology convergence shifts the model of mass communication, and radically shapes the ways we interact and communicate with one another. Vin Crosby (2002) described three communications media in “What is new media?”. He saw Interpersonal media as “one to one”, Mass media as “one to many” and, finally New Media as Individuation Media or “many to many”.

When we think of interactivity and its meaning, we assume that it is only prominent in the conversational dynamics of individuals who are face-to-face. This restriction of opinion does not allow us to see its existence in mediated communication forums. Interactivity is present in some programming work, such as video games. It's also viable in the operation of traditional media. In the mid 1990s, filmmakers started using inexpensive digital cameras to create films. It was also the time when moving image technology had developed, which was able to be viewed on computer desktops in full motion. This development of new media technology was a new method for artists to share their work and interact with the big world. Other settings of interactivity include radio and television talk shows, letters to the editor, listener participation in such programs, and computer and technological programming. Interactive new media has become a true benefit to every one because people can express their artwork in more than one way with the technology that we have today and there is no longer a limit to what we can do with our creativity.

Interactivity can be considered as a central concept in understanding new media, but different media forms possess different degree of interactivity, even some forms of digitized and converged media are not in fact interactive at all. Tony Feldman considers digital satellite television as an example of a new media technology that uses digital compression to dramatically increase the number of television channels that can be delivered, and which changes the nature of what can be offered through the service, but does not transform the experience of television from the user’s point of view, as it lacks a more fully interactive dimension. It remains the case that interactivity is not an inherent characteristic of all new media technologies, unlike digitization and convergence.

As conclusions, new media can brings a lot of advantages to the world in the future. A lot of things can be developing. Plus, with new media, it can make a lot of changes to the human life in simplify the way of completing things. It also will bring goods to humankind in the future.

"Random Word/Image Association".. That is the topic for this week lecture session. From the class, i figured out that there is a thousand ways to come out with a new ideas. All that we as a student has to do is to provoke reaction from our brain. By then, we can come out with a lots of new cool ideas or stuff. One of the simplest method is, we try to brainstorm all the particular details that was related to the subject given. Once everything had been done, it was easier for us to chose which one is the best ideas and eliminate others that are not interesting.

In the class, as usual, students were ask to do some exercise. and one of the exercise was trying to come out with new ideas how to represent "no" with the subject of a "cat". I try to brainstorm everything that i could into a piece of paper. from there, i found that the teeth of a cat can represents "no". This is because their teeth were sharp. so i try to illustrate the cat with a fear characteristics as much as i could. below are the final outcome that i can came out with :

Week07 2nd entry

for the second entry for this week, i had been asked by my lecture to come out with a juxtaposition according to the exercise that had been done in the class. below are the details abut the exercise that i've done in the class.

Week07 1st entry

for this week lecture, it is still about juxtaposition. basically the lecture about this week are about the rules of juxtaposition. in the lecture, i found out that there are 2 important rules that need to be apply in using juxtaposition. the rules are easy to be understood by others & ensure that it is clear. this two rules are important because it will ensure that our juxtaposition can be accept by others just imagine what others would think if we come out with a juxtaposition by not applying these 2 rules. it will of cause gonna be a weird juxtaposition that someone's can came out with.

Week05 2nd entry

for the second entry for this week. in the class, i've been ask to come out with a mind map about mortar & pestle. basically, i have to come out with a few ideas what are mortar & pestle can be use as in the future. so below are the mind map that showing my ideas. this is what i can think of about mortar & pestle in the future..

Week05 1st entry

For this week, the lecture continues about mind map. but this time difference approach had been used for the lecture session. what can i get from the lecture is that there are a thousand ways in order to come out with a good mind mapping. for instance we can do a mind mapping about everything. i realize that i had to put on a little bit more of concentrations in order to come out with a good mind map. it just take someones to be a bit more creative to produce a good mind map. other than that, we have to believe in ourself that we can produce a good mind map. we just have to keep on working on our mind map until we are satisfy with our mind map that we are capable to come out with.

Week06 2nd entry

By juxtaposing a mailman sorting mail as he energetically strides to his next destination, with a stereotypical cartoon on the wall of a Mexican restaurant, I contrast the presence of hard work to a restaurant sign that speaks of “no work”. While we were surprised to find such ethnic stereotyping in Tucson, which is one-third Hispanic, perhaps political correctness has yet to take effect this close to the Mexican border. Or maybe the cartoon on the wall of this 76 year old landmark restaurant has been there so long that it is now just seen as part of the urban landscape. this is what i think can reflex juxtaposition from what i've learned in class.

Week06 1st entry

Ni Hao!

The topic for this week class is "Juxtaposition". The definition of juxtaposition is placing 2 variables, side by side & their contrast are shown through comparison. For example, rain was always being match with an umbrella. It become a command things. Juxtaposition also may refer to 2 things :
  1. contrast : 2 objects or texts that oppose one another
  2. randomly : 2 random objects moving in parallel, a technique intended to stimulate creativity
Basically juxtaposition are two things that are always come together. after using for a lots of time, it became a command things. other than that, juxtaposition also can be used as a tool to show differences between two worlds. everything that has a contrast that are existed in this world can be use as a juxtaposition. this is what i can interpret from this week's class.

Week 04 1st entry

Convergent & Divergent Thinking

Convergent thinking :
  • consider all the possibilities n turn it into solution

Divergent thinking :
  • consider all of the possibilities that can be developed from the roots

Mind Map
  • improve creativity
  • clear & appropriate
  • save time
  • receptive & confident
  • flow of thoughts & new discoveries
Laws:

layouts:
  • use hierarchy
  • use numerical order

techniques:
  • develop personal styles
  • use emphasis
  • use association
From the lecture session, to be creative we has to able to brainstorm our ideas so that the ideas can be develop. this will enhance our ideas furthermore. other than that, we also will be able to identify any problems and can simply come out with lot of solutions that we can think about. we also can easily remember everything had been brainstormed. other than that we has to be able to change in the way we think. we must practice in order to think in convergent and divergent ways. because both way of thinking has their own advantages. in conclusion, the way we think are important and also it is important for us to note down everything in form of mind map because it is much easier and more organizeable.

Week 03 2nd entry

Steve Jobs are on of the most innovative person in the world for me. This is because, as we can see, there's a lot of changes that have been made by him. In fact, it gives everyone with a great impact in life. By the development and evolution of technology, this CEO's of Apple Inc. introduce to the worlds the most revolutionary that the technology nowadays can give.

For example, iPad that had been introduced for a couple of months earlier. It gives a big impact for now and for the future. Imagine that for a 5 to 10 years later, maybe most of the students and maybe our kids will only bring their iPad to the school or college. Everything can be embed into the iPad. Although it is great for entertainments as well.

Somehow this CEO's of Apple Inc. is 1 step ahead from everyone where he can see a chances to make changes in the world. It all come up with an idea. From there the idea is been develop until they achieve their target. The most important thing is, he is the man that can come out with an novelty, creativity, innovation & invention ideas.

Week 03 1st entry

Novelty,Creativity,Innovation & Invention

Creative Person
> One's who generate new ideas

Creative Process
> How exactly these new ideas/solutions/invention are produce

Other than that, creativity also were divided into 2 types :
  1. Capital "C" creativity, which can made changes some aspect of culture
  2. Small "c" creativity, which serve personal satisfaction & fulfillment
Innovation
> Process of turning ideas into practical reality
> Able to turn something & commercialize it

Novelty
Divided into 2:
1.Subjective novelty
  • perception of something as being new by an individual;person/group
2.Objective novelty
  • something that is new for all humanity in its development through ages
  • always based on what has been created before
Innovation
> process of making improvement by introducing something new(in social context)

Divide into 2 context:
1.Business
  • idea in decreasing the gap between the needs/expectations of the customer & performance of a firm's product
2.Social
  • equally important in devising new collaborative methods
4 types of creativity:
  1. aesthetics organizer
  2. boundary pushers
  3. inventors
  4. the rarest group
in conclusion, to achieve creativity in each individual, a person should have all the attributes of novelty, creativity, innovation & invention. this will ensure that a person that can comes out with a creative ideas can be considered very unique stuff or ideas. all the attributes also will sets that particular person to be on a difference stage compared to others. the most important thing is, if someones that came up wit a very unique ideas, he/she should be able to see all the way(the process) that involved from the very beginning until the end. in other words, that particular person being able to accomplish what he started. this is my interpretation for this week's class.

Week 02 2nd entry

Hye!

Alright.. For the 2nd week, i finally realize that if we want to be creative, we have to see what others can see. We also have to be alert with the opportunities that around us. Also we must confidence with ourself that we can do anything that is impossible by putting a lot of effort into it. For example, note everything down even it is the dumbest idea that we can figure out. Who know that it might be useful in future.

For the video below, we have to be like that. Trying as hard as we can in order to come out with better idea from time to time. In this video, i like the idea that turning a box into a kart. It such a "out of the box" idea. It shows that never give up in trying to come out with better idea or solutions.

Week 02 1st entry

Hello,

This week, the lecture was about "Defining Creativity". Basically, creativity is a new way of doing new things. We also have to believe in ourself that we are able to be much more creative compared to others. That is the key to be such a creative person. To be creative, we must never think that we cannot be creative. It such a lame at all. Each of us are unique. It just we did not find the way or a path yet to be that creative.

We have to believe that there are no such way:
  • only special talented people are creatives
  • hard to be creative
  • our current problems make it become harder
  • i'm not that creative
  • hard to brainstorming
  • have to come up only with new develop ideas to be creative
A particular person also has to had what it takes to be creative. Some sort of personalities that can encourage themselves to be more creative than they can ever imagine. The attributes are such as:
  • blood
  • tear
  • sweat
  • attitude+effort
  • lateral thinking
  • don't judge anything
  • has new perspective about everything
There is a formula: [ ability + attitude + process = CREATIVITY ]

Ability referring to a person should be able to imagine/invent something new or manipulate existing ideas to come out with new ideas.
Attitude referring to a person should be able to accept changes with the new ideas and they also willing to play with those ideas and all possibilities.
Process referring to a person should be able to continually to improve ideas & solutions from time to time.

Finally, people also are motivated to be creative so that they can communicate ideas/values and solve problems.

Week 01 2nd entry

From the lesson that had been given in class, i suddenly realize that each of us a capable of being a creative person. Its just we have to believe in ourself that we can achieve anything. For example, let say that there are 3 persons that are starring at the same images.

The one's that are capable to look into the image and came out with a unique interpretation will be consider as a creative person. This is because only he/she that capable to came out with that particular interpretation. This are some of the images that i think its creative to me. Because each of the images below have its own meaning and interpretation by its creator.

Week 01 1st entry

Hello,

This week my eyes had been open by the lecture session that had been conducted by Mr.Yap. Basically he try to get into our minds and try to make we believes that everyone are capable of being creatives. They just have to believe in themselves that they are creative. But in order to achieve that, we have to think differently compared to others. This is the most important points of all. Only if we are capable to come out with new idea or something that are outside of the box, we can be call creatives people. This what makes us different from others.

For example, i have an idea, why do we need to take attendance in class. Why we can't simply just create something that are more electronically such as a device where all the students can scan their ID card before they get into the classes. It is more accurate i think. Once the student already scan their ID, attendance of the student also will automatically been taken. By the way its just a concept. Maybe there is an improvement that can be made to make this idea much more accurate.

By learning this subject, i'm hoping that 1 day i'm being able to come out with 1 creative idea that are unique compare to others. Also i'm hoping that, by attending this class, i will be able to learn more about myself and my capability. What makes me unique or different from anyone else.

I think thats all i can get from the class on week 01. Its just an introduction and briefing to the class. =D
